Recording this Siegfried Idyll almost cost Mr. Solti the whole ring cycle that he was in the final stages of completion. RING RESOUNDING written by John Culshaw is an amazing read about the recording of the "SOLTI RING" iT'S A FACINATING READ.

Unbelievable pianistic execution in the 3rd. For Gilels to stay that technically sound despite maintaining his agitated, passionate, and speedy phrasing and elevated choice in tempo for the movement just demonstrates the once-in-a-generation talent he possessed.

But back to the Franck: this Russian instrumental genius - do we have people who can render chamber music ensemble like these guys? There must be some folks, especially here in Chicago where I am. I wish I knew them!

Oistrakh-Richter and Rostropovich-Richter and the trio! I think Beethoven would have loved them, especially along with the masterful technology and power of the Steinway, and the recording studio ambience, which would have broken through his deafness, especially at the lower frequencies, and given him a very significant boost that he had no chance of getting from an 18th century clavichord. Poor LvB: if he could have had today’s technology, who knows what else we would have got out of him. I think we would have had a richer middle register, more immortal melodies, and a less busy and booming bass that reflects the great master’s yearning to hear from without what he could not stop hearing from within!

Richter’s left hand is so strong; not the poor relative that it is with many; Liszt would have loved that!
